Phonics Play is a super website with lots of games for you to play and polish up your phonics skills at the same time.  Why not try a game we have played in class?  It is called Buried Treasure and is all about deciding whether a word is real or rubbish.  Make the pirates do their dance!

Try some of the other games on Phases 3, 4 or 5.  There are lots to choose from.

Good for a rainy day (and we have had plenty of those).

A few notes!

I thought I would contact you all with a few things that are happening at the moment.

Combs – I am sorry that I forgot to remind you all to bring a comb in for music this week.  If anyone gets this message (I know it is late) and can find one for tomorrow morning, well brilliant, please bring it in.  Strange request I know but you will all find out in good time!

Magarine tubs  We will be using margarine tubs for a design and technology project linked with our forces theme.  We need lots so if anyone can help us out we would be very greatful for any empty tubs you can send in.

School Photo  I know you all took a proof copy of this years class photo today.  We all thought it was very tiny and very difficult to make out but then I received a full size version.  It will be on display in the classroom for us all to see over the next week so please come in and have a look.  It is very different but we all like it a lot!

Finally just a word on reading.  Well done!  You are all reading so much at home and making fabulous progress.  Keep up the good work and all that book changing!

Wet but Wonderful!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Well what a day we had and you were all wonderful!  We got very wet (just look at the picture of Emma and Megan in the tower of the new tree house and all that rain) but through all of it you just kept going and made no complaints at all!  In fact you had lots of fun, just look at the pictures.

Thank you to all our helpers too.  We just got wetter and wetter and you all kept smiling.  Thank you!

Eggniting Writing!

Our special writing week is well under way now and as you can see the children have been having a great time.  We began our week by greeting our visitors – one dozen eggs, keeping warm in a cosy little incubator.  After visiting the eggs we decided to make celebration hats which we would wear when they hatched.  Then we all agreed to meet the challenge – to write a book all about eggs.  It will be a class book which will stay in 1J for all to enjoy.

Well, you have almost completed your writing now and it is looking absolutely fabulous.  All off you have engaged with our challenge and you have each written a page for our book – fantastic!

The chicks have nearly all hatched and are looking very sweet and fluffy.  Why not tell someone at home what they do when they get tired – all at the same time too!  We are looking forward to being able to handle the chicks a little next week when they are bigger.

Spellings.

Just a message about our spelling routine.  We are finding it a little tricky getting our spellings done on a Friday with all our other routines.  We have decided it will all fit a lot better if we move our spelling day to Tuesdays.  With that in mind our spellings this week will not be done on Friday but will be carried over until next Tuesday.

Well done children and keep having a go!

Planting trees!

On Monday (5th March) 1J will be joining forces with 3/4E to plant trees in the school grounds.  This is part of the continuing improvement to our outside space.  We will be lead and guided by Kate from Habitat Heroes.

The weather was dry at the end of last week and I thought there would be no need for wellies but as it has changed over the weekend!  Can I put a last minute request out for the children to bring warm coats and wellies to school tomorrow.  I think we will be working on the field.

Weather permitting, we will have a great afternoon.

Many thanks for your help.

Viking Feast!

We celebrated everything we have learnt about Vikings by travelling in our ‘Longboat’ to a new land and having a feast when we got there!

As you can see we have had a very busy week and enjoyed every minute of it!   The photos show what a variety of activities we got up to;  role playing in the Viking Longhouse, making Viking helmets (that really don’t have horns on them), singing our Longboat song and finally enjoying our feast.  A few of you even drew archaeology pictures.  Your non-fiction books are looking very good children  - you are amazing writers!  Why not tell someone at home what a viking likes to eat and drink or why a Longhouse would be very dark and smelly!   Well done all of you for learning so well this week!

Have a wonderful week off, see you all again on the 20th.

Vikings!

This week has been ‘Viking Week’ in 1J.  We have found out lots about where they came from and how they lived.  We know that archaeologists dig very carefully to find out about the past like they did in York to find out about Jorvik.  In the classroom we have made Viking Longships, shields and jewelry.  In the hall we thought about how Vikings might dance at a celebration and in music with Mrs Campbell we learnt a Viking rowing song.  We have even designed and created a Viking Longhouse in 1J.  To bring all this together we have written our own non-fiction books – ‘All About Vikings’.  Look out for them on a display soon.  We have been very busy!

We found a game on a BBC website while we were looking at our information.  I promised you all that I would put it here so that you can play it at home.  Have fun, I hope you can find lots of artefacts!

Numeracy Games

Here are some links to some of the maths games we have played recently (or we will be playing soon).

Depth Charge

A game where you have to think about adding 10.

    Adding 10 Depthcharger                  http://www.ictgames.com/add10Depth/index.html

                                                                      http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/numbertime/games/index.shtml

BBC Numbertime games – choose any of these to improve your counting skills.

In numeracy this week we will be thinking about solving problems by adding or subtracting.  We will also look at different amounts of money in our purses and thinking about what happens when we don’t pay with the correct money.  Last week we found out about the pairs of numbers that make five or ten.  We will keep thinking about this as we all found out how important it is to know these.

Tell someone at home about number bonds.

What goes with 3 to make 5?

What goes with 7 to make 10?

or …              ”I say 6, you say …”                               Why not play the game at home!

Have fun with numbers!

Dig!

First of all, well done children for being such fantastic representatives for our school today on our trip to York.  Mrs Arter, Mrs Sutherland and I think you were all brilliant.  Well done!  It is late so I shall just put a small selection of pictures up today and hope to add some more tomorrow.  I took lots!  look out on the school website too.

It was a great day.  You learnt how the rubbish that people have thrown away can tell us so much about how they lived.  You even tried being an archaeologist and finding out how to do a dig.  Tell someone at home what you found.  What time was it from?  Don’t forget to talk about Barley Hall too and how we all pretended we were at a feast with the Lord and Lady.  Can you remember the funny (but true) story about a pot?

Hope you weren’t all too tired!
